Put your vacation on ice
One of the world’s most intricate, arduous and artistic undertakings is also a creative work of functionality and impermanence. Open from Jan. 4 through April 4, the Hotel de Glace is both an exhibition and accommodation that can only be seen and experienced for three months before it starts to melt and is taken down.

The House and the Senate are expected to vote on the reconciliation legislation within the next week or so to resolve their differences over health care reform.

Letting ‘Freedom’ ring
Frederic Chopin wrote a piano sonata in A minor; Alicia Keys’ debut album was called “Songs in A Minor.”

The key to Kyoto
Kyoto’s temples and Geisha culture are legendary, but this city is no slouch when it comes to mixing in a large slice of contemporary, too.

Not your average island getaway
We promise not to get that annoying Beach Boys song stuck in your head — impossible now that we’ve brought it up. Aruba, heading up that list of tropical islands sung about in “Kokomo,” is often incorrectly lumped with the Caribbean, when in fact, it couldn’t be more unique from the rest.
Like the others, Aruba has the gorgeous beaches and stunning coral reefs. What it doesn’t have are hurricane seasons. Tourists never have to worry about planning a vacation to the island that lands in the middle of hurricanes Brad, Manny or Zach. Instead you’ll be met with cacti and warm, dry breezes.

So much more than tacos & tequila
Get lost in a super mercado
You must treat yourself to a boat ride on the canals of Xochimilco (like Venice, but much more authentic, colorful, and less touristy). A visit to one of the open- air markets is key, as well. Just be careful getting around. Although great strides have been made to tackle violence, Mexico City is still a place where foreigners should use caution. Only use official taxis, or have your hotel hail them for you.

Stay ripped on the road
Traveling can wreck the best-laid health plans. “But that shouldn’t be any excuse,” says Brett Hoebel, an international fitness expert and creator of the newly-launched RevAbs DVD (www.revabs.com). He shared with us a circuit you can do in your own hotel room. “These will work on strength, conditioning and cardio, without having to lug any equipment,” he tells us.
